Excuse #1. Nobody Wants To Read What I Write

by Rebecca on July 30, 2011

So you’re telling yourself that you need to stop blogging because nobody wants to read what you write.  How do you know?  Have you asked everybody with access to the internet whether they’re interested in what you write?  There is no basis for this argument.  In fact, this is just your inner critic giving you a smackdown.

Action to take if you are using this excuse:

  1. Remind yourself that number of readers does not determine the quality of the writing.  In fact, I recently read an entire series of books that was very poorly written.  I consumed these books like a drug but when it was all said and done I almost felt as though I had lost brain cells – it was just that bad.
  2. Remind yourself why you write.  Do you write just to be read or do you write because you have something to say?  If your writing is fueled by enthusiasm or drive than maybe that’s an area that needs attention.  If you are writing about something you’re passionate for then you shouldn’t just be writing to get readers but to actually feel like you’re accomplishing something.
  3. Take a look at your analytics.  Maybe they aren’t commenting or retweeting your work but that doesn’t mean they aren’t reading it.  Take a look at your analytics and see for sure what’s going on.
  4. Be realistic.  Honestly, if you just started blogging two weeks ago and you haven’t done any sort of publicity for your blog you can’t realistically expect people to find you.  So let go of the false expectations and put more effort into writing and marketing.
And if you’ve taken all of these actions then you need to proceed to the most important…

Action #5. Leave a Comment or Contact Me!

Send me your link.  I promise to read your content.  I’ll even reply back to you and let you know what I think.  Maybe I can give you an idea on how to spread the word about your site.  Maybe I can do a write up about you on one of my own websites.  Come on, all it takes is a couple clicks for you to send me your link…and in return you’ll gain at least one reader!

Contact me.  I want to be one of your readers!

July 28, 2011

As the idea of setting up a blog started to form I needed to think clearly about the goal of my blog. What do I hope to gain from the blog? Do I want to get famous? Do I want to sell products? Do I want to inform people? Do I want an outlet for [...]

What I Had Before I Set Up My Blog

July 28, 2011

Goal of Day 1: Set Up My Blog Day 1 started early.  By early I mean I was up until 2am getting the site started.  I was fueled on by inspiration, motivation and an unhealthy amount of caffeine.  (Note: iced coffee is my latest addiction!) So what was I doing between midnight and 2am?  I [...]
